Visioning Worship

I’ve been acquainted with the congregation where I’ve recently started working for years. One of the things they do in worship that I have always loved is that they state their congregational vision statement in worship.

The last few churches where I was working in music, I was unsure of how music fit into the mission and vision of the church. This is because I never knew how those churches viewed their individual mission and vision within the Great Commission.

In the old days, we didn’t talk about mission and vision. This was partly because we didn’t need to and partly because there really wasn’t one. We didn’t need to talk about mission and vision, because most people just went to the church in their area. There wasn’t a mission and vision because that was viewed as something other people do. Churches gave money to missionaries “out there” while we did real church over here. Now we understand that mission and vision is for all Christians and that we need to view our daily lives in chorus with the Great Commission.

If I remember correctly, a church where Travis previously served read their mission statement at the end of worship. The church where I serve reads the vision statement at the beginning of worship. Either way, I think that it’s important to have this in front of the people who do the actual ministry and we need to be reminded of that regularly. Worship is one of the few times when a large part of the people associated with your church are in the same place at the same time. Worship is a perfect opportunity to get the marching orders and get ready to head out to fulfill that mission.

What’s your vision or mission? Is it useful in worship?
