The New York Daily News had as their front page headline, “Rot in Hell!” Now, the Daily News is not a Christian organization, but this is the sentiment of much of the citizens of this great country. CNN suggests that most Americans think Bin Laden is in hell. But this is not what we as Christians are called to do, think or believe.
I’ve never understood the expression, “rot in hell.” In order for something to rot, there needs to be moisture.Though I’ve never been to hell, I imagine that a fiery inferno would not have sufficient moisture to allow rotting. Therefore I, personally, do not think anyone is “rotting” in hell.
As Christians, Christ has challenged us to forgive, “seventy-seven times” or “Seventy times seven times.” We are also told, “Judge not, lest ye be judged.” Neither of these statements allow us the opportunity to dance on the graves of our enemies, though the psalmist would like us to do just that.
So how then do we talk to other Christians about this? What should we do in worship?
We can talk about the brokenness of humanity without celebrating Bin Laden’s death. We can discuss how there is opportunity for forgiveness. Discuss Psalm 130. This goes from depths of woe to forgiveness. Sing Psalm 90 paraphrases, “Our God, Our Help in Ages Past.” Read Psalm 121 and preach on God the protector. I hope that all the readers of this blog are planning on doing something about peace this weekend.
Praying.
Singing.
Reflecting.
